How can I get my relative transferred to a prison nearer home?
Prison transfers
A prison will not transfer a prisoner at the request of anyone on the outside. Prisoners have the right to ask for a transfer to another prison if it is difficult for their families to visit them.
When a prisoner has applied to be transferred, his or her family and friends can write to the Prison Governor supporting the application.
It can also help if professionals in contact with the family write as well, eg. A doctor, confirming a health problem that makes travel difficult, or a teacher, confirming that a child is having problems at school because they are missing the person in prison, etc. See also our factsheet on Transfers
