Sponsored Walk

“Stone walls do not a prison make, nor iron bars a cage” – Richard Lovelace (17th century English poet)

Despite the tube strike and the threat of heavy showers, 17 people took part in our sponsored walk on 7 September.  Prisoners’ families, volunteers and staff followed a five mile route with the theme of London’s punitive past.  The rain thankfully held off, and the walkers enjoyed late summer sunshine for most of the way.

There were a number of scheduled stops on the way: Marshalsea Prison in Borough, Crossbones Cemetery, Clinks Prison Museum, the Old Bailey and Inner London Crown Court.  At each stop, Director Alan Hooker gave a short, informative talk about the history of the location, so everyone learned something as they walked.  For example, few people knew that the park next to inner London Crown Court, where we hold our Easter Egg Hunt each year, was once the site of Horsemonger Lane Prison, and was a place of execution!

The walk was also a chance for people involved with the organisation in different capacities to meet one another and socialise over a delicious buffet lunch laid on for participants.

The event was so successful that we hope to organise more fundraising events in the future which will enable the wide range of people involved with the organisation to come together to help raise money for it.
